Our first time with A Team Home Services and everything was great. Michael arrived on time, was very polite and professional. He was able to diagnose our electrical problem in a few minutes, had everything on his van to complete the necessary repairs and was done in a very timely manner. As an additional item, we had Michael check the breaker and wiring for a window AC unit and he took care of that for us as well. Excellent service experience. Will definitely call the A Team when needed in the future. Highly recommend.

I had A Team Home Services come out to work up a bid for a whole home generator. They were very thorough. They evaluated the best place to put the generator considering multiple variable s including cost, noise, visibility. They worked up bids including a smaller and larger generator, per my request. The bids were clearly itemized and included things such as the exact length of generator service cable needed, the cost of the generator pad, etc. It was incredibly transparent. Jason and Michael were very professional and kind. I have not decided which direction to go yet for backup the next time we lose power, but wanted to give these guys a great review for their professionalism, transparency, and thoroughness

I had setup an estimate to get a hookup for my Generator. Michael and William were awesome. They inspected the house and gave pointers for improvements. But the best thing was they were able to tell me the scope of the work and explained what was needed for my generator. Then they said they could do it same day. Say what ?! They were very quick with the install and cleaned up afterwards. Now, I have a direct connection to my house. Both men were very well spoken and easy to talk to. I would recommend them again and again. Great job, guys!

Jason provided the introduction estimate. He was extremely courteous, friendly and knowledgeable about all electrical services I requested. He checked my electrical box panels at no charge and recommended services per his experience. He also provided the estimate at reasonable rates with 2 to 5 year warranties depending on the repair options. Id strongly recommend 👌

What Is a Power Surge and What Causes It?

A power surge is a sudden spike in electrical voltage that travels through your home’s wiring. Even small surges can gradually damage electronics. Larger surges can destroy appliances instantly.

In Austin, power surges commonly occur due to:

  • Lightning strikes during Texas storms
  • Downed power lines
  • Utility grid fluctuations
  • Faulty or outdated wiring
  • Large appliances cycling on and off
  • HVAC systems and electric dryers drawing heavy loads

Without proper surge protection, these spikes can damage expensive electronics such as televisions, refrigerators, HVAC systems, computers, and smart home equipment.

Even minor, repeated surges shorten the lifespan of appliances over time.

Why Surge Protection Matters in Austin Homes

Austin’s weather patterns, rapid development, and growing electrical demand increase the likelihood of voltage irregularities. With more homes installing EV chargers, smart panels, solar systems, and high-efficiency appliances, electrical systems are under greater strain than ever before.

Whole-home surge protection helps:

  • Prevent costly appliance replacement
  • Protect sensitive electronics
  • Reduce fire risk
  • Stabilize your home’s electrical system
  • Protect investments in EV chargers and solar panels

Modern homes rely heavily on electronics. Surge protection is no longer optional—it is essential.

How Outdated Wiring Can Contribute to Power Surges

Older homes in Austin may contain aluminum wiring or aging copper systems. Aluminum wiring, commonly used between the 1960s and mid-1970s, expands and contracts with temperature changes. Over time, this can cause loose connections, overheating, and voltage instability.

Outdated wiring can:

  • Increase fire risk
  • Cause inconsistent voltage flow
  • Trigger repeated surges
  • Potentially affect insurance coverage

If your home was built several decades ago and has not been updated, an electrical inspection is highly recommended.

How Can I Protect My Austin Home From Power Surges?

There are three primary ways to protect your home from electrical surges. The most effective solution often involves a combination of protection levels.

Whole-Home Surge Protectors

Whole-home surge protectors are installed directly at your main electrical panel. They monitor incoming power and immediately divert excess voltage safely into the ground when a surge is detected.

This protects:

  • Major appliances
  • HVAC systems
  • Refrigerators and ovens
  • Home offices
  • Smart home systems
  • Hardwired lighting

Whole-home surge protection provides comprehensive defense for your entire electrical system.

Surge-Protecting Outlets

Surge-protecting outlets are installed at individual wall locations. They offer protection to devices plugged directly into them and are ideal for:

  • Entertainment systems
  • Home offices
  • Gaming setups
  • Medical equipment

These provide localized protection but do not safeguard your entire electrical system.

Plug-In Surge Protectors

Portable plug-in surge protectors resemble power strips but include internal surge protection components.

They are convenient for:

  • Desktop computers
  • Charging stations
  • Media consoles
  • Temporary office setups

It is important to note that not all power strips include surge protection. Professional guidance ensures proper product selection.

Is Whole-Home Surge Protection Worth It?

Yes. A single severe power surge can cost thousands of dollars in damaged electronics and appliances.

Compared to the cost of replacing:

  • HVAC systems
  • Refrigerators
  • Washer and dryer units
  • Televisions
  • Smart home hubs
  • EV chargers

Whole-home surge protection is a cost-effective preventative investment.
